When a person dies in Ontario, a burial permit must be issued before a funeral service can take place. Generally, funeral directors take responsibility for obtaining the burial permit.
Depending on the wishes of the individual who died, a family member or authorized individual arranges to dispose of the body. This may involve holding a funeral service followed by burial in a local cemetery or cremation followed by burial.
It is not necessary to hire a funeral director when someone dies, but a family must comply with Ontario laws. Embalming is also not required under Ontario law, but may be recommended in some circumstances.
Kingston has a number of cemeteries and crematorium services. Cataraqui Cemetery is one of the city's oldest cemeteries. A number of local dignitaries are buried at Cataraqui, including Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.
