Community gardens are small plots of land shared by friends and neighbours, where they grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Some parents use community gardens to teach their children about growing food and to save money on grocery bills. For many people, community gardens are a way to become involved in the community and to get to know their neighbours. Community gardens are also useful for people who don't have access to backyards or balconies during the growing season.
Kingston has a number of community gardens in neighbourhoods throughout the city. Some gardens are run like a small company, with a president and treasurer. Families and individuals must apply to be part of a community garden and usually pay a small fee.
