Activities & Sports
Seniors
Kingston has an active population of retired people and senior citizens. Older residents are involved in clubs, choirs, seminars, lectures and workshops. Many activities are designed to keep older individuals healthy, happy and involved in the community after they have stopped working. There are also programs to help seniors stay physically active through dancing, skating, hiking, badminton and fitness classes.
A focal point for older people in Kingston is The Seniors Centre (see For More Information links below), which organizes out-of-town trips, seminars, workshops, and special events. The centre also promotes healthy living through foot-care services, hearing and arthritis clinics, legal advice and home repairs for individuals living at home.
The Council on Aging Frontenac-Kingston (see For More Information links below) also works on behalf of seniors in Kingston. The council organizes research studies and sponsors workshops on various issues. It also has a wide range of educational materials about aging and seniors.
The City of Kingston offers instructional and recreational programs for seniors year round. Some examples include furniture-making workshops, cake decorating, belly dancing, volleyball, badminton, ballroom dancing and adult hip hop.
Many seniors in the Kingston area are members of the Rideau Trail Association, a non-profit organization that maintains a hiking trail that links Kingston to Canada's capital city of Ottawa. Birdwatching, bridge and gardening clubs are also popular activities.
