Business Licensing
If you plan to start a new business in Kingston, you may need a licence from City Hall. The building and licensing department is responsible for issuing and renewing licences and carrying out inspections of prospective business ventures.
If you own more than one business, a licence will be required for each one. A licence in the City of Kingston is valid from January 1 to December 31 and must be renewed before January 31 of the following year.
A number of occupations and businesses must be licensed in Kingston. Some examples are:
- Pet Stores
- Auctioneers
- Amusement Arcades
- Food service premises
- Meat and fish sales
- Theatres
- Tobacco sales
- Lodging houses
- Automotive repair
- Adult entertainment stores
By using an online tool called BizPaL on the city's website, you can learn about the permits, licences and other requirements needed to start a new business. For example, to qualify for a business licence, you must register your business name and obtain the necessary permits to charge Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). An inspection by the public health department may also be needed.
