The City of Kingston has three hospitals that serve residents of Kingston and southeastern Ontario. All three hospitals are part of a teaching hospital system that trains doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Interpretive services are available upon request.

Each hospital has a distinct role:

  • Kingston General Hospital provides a wide range of programs and services in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, cancer care, obstetrics, urology, critical care and emergency medicine. Kingston General also operates an emergency department and trauma centre 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Hotel Dieu Hospital offers a wide range of health services, including an eye clinic, diabetes education and management centre, eating disorder clinic, and ear, nose and throat care. Hotel Dieu also operates an urgent care centre from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day for patients with non-life-threatening medical emergencies.
  • Providence Care provides care to older adults through geriatric medicine, specialized care for people with complex medical and psychiatric conditions, palliative care for people with terminal illnesses and mental health care for people with chronic mental health conditions. Providence Care also provides rehabilitation services and programs to individuals in the Kingston area.

Ontario hospitals provide care to people with Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage. Patients are sometimes charged for services or equipment not covered by OHIP, such as crutches. Patients who don't have OHIP coverage are charged fees to receive care at an Ontario hospital. The amount charged varies according to the types of services a patient requires.
